Quality prototypes for IQ Projector
“Having the Prototypes from Temponik is like holding the production part in the hand already in the developing phase”, says Koen Beyers, mechanical engineer at Barco. Temponik produced prototypes for Barca, Belgium in aluminium, magnesium and zinc using the same tool.
Barco is a recognized worldwide supplier of Projection systems at the high end of the market. In connection with their development of a new projector platform called IQ series, Temponik was chosen to supply various cast parts both internally and externally for the projector.
Weight is naturally an important aspect on these hand carried projectors, and Barco wanted to investigate the possibilities and solutions in zink, aluminium and magnesium.
From the same production tool Temponik supplied Barco with parts in all 3 alloys, making Barco capable of testing all alloys without losing important time to the market. Barco wanted to be absolutely sure to have functional finished parts ready for the big introduction of the projector at the Infocom Show in USA, and succeeded in showing the first –(and subsequently award winning) projectors to the public just in time.

And his colleague at Barco, states: “the final choice of magnesium for the complete housing and the optical base was not only good for weight and structural strength, also Electro Magnetic radiation was kept below limits of class B from the first shot and the noise was more easily kept below 32 dBA (2m) because of the equal heat spreading capacity of the housing. To investigate positioning of optical components, parts really needed to be in the final material and with similar tolerances as the final injection parts. There are not many suppliers to do this for magnesium prototypes and out of the ones we contacted, cooperation with Temponik was very well appreciated”.
